BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Bowling Green Code Compliance and Animal Protection received a truckload of pet supplies from Chewy.com, an online retailer of pet supplies. The city distributed all supplies to people who entered their names into the database.
Many people are struggling to afford pet supplies, many of which have gone up in price due to inflation. This leaves many people unable to afford pets, contributing to the crisis level of many humane societies in the United States.
Code Compliance and Animal Welfare Department Manager Brad Shargolotsky said they are happy to help people care for their pets.
“The City understands that there are many pet owners and individuals here in the City who are experiencing financial hardship. Therefore, we are working with our community partners to offset many of those costs and provide free pet owners. We want to offer pet supplies for all,” Shargolotsky said.
For other members of the Code Compliance Office, such as Administrative Specialist Pam Booth, this was a great way to engage with community members.
“That's my bread and butter. I love talking to people and interacting with the public and doing whatever we can to help them and solve problems,” he said. is what we're really here for. I mean, we know that a lot of people think that compliance with the Code is just about citations and fines and things like that. But our… From a standpoint, it’s more of an education job,” Booth said.
This year, the office received over 1,000 product applications and was happy to fulfill orders.
