What is an innovative design firm doing in India's emerging market? For clients who are yet to keep up with the changes in design, we explain the strategies they should adopt to bring their products to market.
Pune-based Unbind Studios has carved a niche in providing creative solutions to entrepreneurs who are struggling to promote their products in the market.
“A lot of people think they'll go to the office, sketch, and come back tomorrow with a design. They tend to think it's very simple, but when it comes to the product, the creative that's best for that product… There is a big process behind it, to understand the solution and what works in terms of aesthetics and user experience,” says Pune-based Unbound Studio with Malhar Shete in 2016.
While the era of industrial design, the aesthetics of consumer products, began in Germany and blossomed across Europe in the 20th century, India was a few steps behind. The National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and the Center for Industrial Design at the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai were only established in the 1960s.
The country is trying to make up for lost time, and one of the companies taking part in that industrial design evolution is Unbind Studios.
As a homegrown company, Unbind Studios' job is to turn ideas into compelling realities. You go to the studio with a concept for your company, and a designer fills in the blanks with a name that fits your brand, product, logo, and branding.
“Then we help you develop the actual product, whether it's a physical product like a toothbrush or a digital product. The next step is to develop a website and front media that will be the point of contact with our customers. This is possible because our studio has disciplines in graphic design, user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and industrial design,” says Savant. The company's products range from tongue cleaners to carbon capture machines.
Like many traditional design firms, Unbind Studios offers one or several services individually. As a result, we have been able to attract international customers and major Indian companies.
Unbind Studios' approach is in line with the India Design Report by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which states that “the role of industrial design companies has shifted from strategy execution to strategy formulation, thereby paving the way for disruptive innovation.” “It will open up.” According to the report, the division is valued at $40 million (not including outsourced engineering design services) and is growing at a rate of 10% annually.
In 2024, Unbind Studios will expand its footprint around the world in its core areas of robotics, software, and medical products.
“As the world looks to and from India, there is a growing demand for higher quality design, and we are excited to be able to provide this,” Savant said.
Unbind's hallmark is the simplicity of its design, and its strengths are evolving software and prototyping skills, user interface (UI) and user experience (UX).
“As a consultancy, we adhere to the design language of our clients, but for the past two years, it is not necessarily market-oriented, but our own design language and product domain knowledge,” Savant says. This year, we are also considering this range of products in areas such as furniture design and household appliances.
Savant added that as the world looks at and towards India, there is a growing demand for higher quality designs. “This is what we can offer and we’re really excited,” he says.
