Toby is a very special boy to everyone at Huntington's Little Shelter Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. He arrived at the shelter at 5 months old in poor condition: his body was matted, covered in feces, and extremely poorly socialized. For the first five months of Toby's life, he spent most of it living in a crate with his three other siblings. This means he had little to no interaction with people or the outside world. But he lived in such close contact with his siblings that I noticed at the shelter that he would come out of his shell when there were other dogs around him. For this reason, we are requesting that Toby be rehomed to a home that already has another dog.
Toby is a very cute and handsome pup, and people tend to gravitate toward him because of his looks. But he's not a typical dog because he didn't come from a typical situation. He won't be a dog that you can easily pet. Instead, he tends to sit in a corner and tremble or run away when strangers approach him. Toby needs a special kind of adopter. Someone who understands and respects that he is not the kind of dog that will immediately run up and choose an owner. It takes a lot of time and effort. You may not be able to adjust in the first week, the first month, or even the first year, but one thing we can all say here at the shelter is that if you come from a difficult situation like Toby, This means that they may not be able to adapt when working with other dogs. It can be a rewarding experience and every small victory feels like a big accomplishment.
When Toby first arrived at Little Shelter, he had no idea what a leash was and had probably never walked on grass before. Everything was new to him and he was afraid of human contact. It took months for him to come back, but he was so happy just to be able to pet him for the first time. Toby is a very good kid who came from a bad background, and he needs someone to show him that it's okay. With the help of other dogs in the house, he can learn that not all humans are so bad.
