Huntsville Animal Services is once again gearing up for Ground Dog Day, an annual event held in conjunction with Groundhog Day on Friday, February 2nd.
There are no groundhogs in Huntsville who can predict shadows. huntsville animal services relies on the predictive skills of Cosmo, an adoptable hybrid male. Cosmo uses his sharp nose to accurately predict the seasonal weather forecast by choosing between the bowl of kibble marked “Early Spring” or the bowl marked “More Winter.”
This event is designed to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption, foster care, and spaying/neutering. To celebrate Cosmo's big moment, the shelter is waiving adoption fees for most adult dogs for the week leading up to Ground Dog Day.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said Ground Dog Day not only provides an opportunity to raise awareness for adoptions and foster homes, but also provides a day-to-day job for Huntsville Animal Services employees. He praised staff for their efforts in caring for animals in need and finding suitable homes.
“The tireless efforts of the Huntsville Animal Services team are making a huge impact on the well-being of our furry friends,” said Mayor Battle. “Their dedication ensures that these animals receive the care they deserve while they wait for their forever homes.”
Interim Animal Services Director Virgie Graham said Ground Dog Day emphasizes the importance of spaying and neutering and how it plays a critical role in managing the city's pet population. He also said that there is.
“Spaying/neutering is an important step in responsible pet ownership,” he says. “By tackling this issue, we improve the lives of animals while contributing to the well-being of local communities.”
Each pet is spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before leaving the shelter. She treats pets with flea and tick preventatives for three months.
