An elderly Chinese woman decided to leave 20 million yuan (RM13 million) to her cat and dog.
According to SCMP, the woman from Shanghai first made a will several years ago that left money and property to her three children.
However, when her children chose not to visit or care for her when she became ill, she decided to change her mind about the inheritance. Zonglan News reported that her children rarely contacted her and the only companions she had were her pet cat and dog.
She amended her will to claim that after her death, all money must be used to care for her pets and their offspring.
She wanted to leave all her assets directly to her pet, but that is not legal in China, said an official at the Beijing-based Will Registration Center headquarters.
But officials explained that there are other options to resolve the issue. Therefore, a local veterinary hospital was appointed as the administrator of her estate and was responsible for the care of the animals.
The official added that he also advised her to appoint a trusted person to oversee the veterinary hospital to ensure pets are properly cared for.
Another official at the East China branch of the China Will Registration Center said he warned people about the risks of leaving all their assets in a pet clinic before making a final will.
They explained to the woman that she could change her mind again at any time if her children changed their attitude towards her.
