FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Fayetteville Police have arrested a woman on more than 30 animal cruelty charges.
Morgan McDonald, 72, was arrested on 18 counts of aggravated cruelty to dogs, cats and horses and 17 counts of animal cruelty after charges were filed at her residence.
McDonald inherited the “feral cat rescue'' in October 2023. She told police she didn't want to give up any of the cats because she didn't want to upset her late friend.
When police arrived at her home on February 14, they said they noticed several of the cats were malnourished, had difficulty walking, and had mucus around their noses and eyes.
Police described a strong odor of cat urine and feces in the affidavit.
The “small Yorkshire terrier type dog” was reported to have sustained significant damage to its front legs and a large hairless spot on its back.
Police said they saw two cats in a cage without water or food. McDonald said the number of cats in cages has increased because cats are very aggressive and attack other cats.
Police arrived with a warrant on February 15 and found 18 cats with upper respiratory infections and two cats infected with FIV, the feline version of HIV.
Responding officers said they did not see any cat food, but did see a large bowl of raw ground meat and shredded cheese and a large bowl of spoiled curdled milk. Mr. McDonald said that cats like spoiled milk.
Police removed 34 cats and one dog from the home. They are currently being treated at the Washington County Shelter.
“They are receiving 24-hour care. They will be held here for 15 days to give the woman time to appeal. If she appeals, it will be kept here as evidence until trial. ” said Tad Sowers, Washington County Public Information Director.
Once the animals are back to health, they will be made available for adoption.
McDonald's bonds are pending.
