A dramatic race at Melbourne's Albert Park saw championship leader Max Verstappen retire early in the grand prix after suffering a very rare mechanical problem.
Max Verstappen suffers rare mechanical failure, Ferrari 1-2
Max Verstappen led the field from pole position, but DRS activated one lap later, allowing Carlos Sainz to pounce on the Red Bull driver and overtake him on the long back straight to take the lead.
Verstappen had complained that his car was very loose, but it soon became clear that something was wrong with his RB20 as smoke started coming from the rear of the car. The problem quickly worsened and the Dutch driver was unable to resolve the brake problem on his car, forcing him to pit and retire.
With Sainz in the lead, the Spaniard began to consolidate his position and controlled the race from start to finish, holding off Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.
Ferrari had to worry about pressure from behind from Lando Norris as McLaren ordered Oscar Piastri to step aside and let Norris pass, but the British driver put serious pressure on Leclerc. I couldn't do that.
Ferrari secured a 1-2 victory ahead of Norris, with Piastri fourth, much to the delight of the home fans in the grandstands.
Red Bull took just 5th place in the prize money as Sergio Perez moved up from 6th on the grid and Fernando Alonso took advantage of the virtual safety car break to shake off a hard race to recover from 10th on the grid to 6th. I picked it up and returned home. The tires on which he started the race.
Mercedes' George Russell looked like he would finish in seventh place, but he suffered a huge crash on the final lap and the virtual safety car was deployed again, leaving him disabled and the race ended. Russell was putting intense pressure on Alonso in sixth place, but lost control and lined up the Spaniard on the back straight.
Aston Martin's Lance Stroll finished 7th, RB Hiroki Tsunoda 8th and Nico Hulkenberg 9th, while Haas' Kevin Magnussen finished 10th in double points.
Apart from Verstappen, fellow world champion Lewis Hamilton was the only Mercedes driver to retire after suffering an apparent power unit failure.
