The latest Storm Tracker forecast from meteorologist Jill Szwed.
Have a nice Tuesday! The Arctic air has disappeared! Albany had been below freezing for nearly 200 hours. The temperature has gotten a lot warmer since today. The gradual warm-up will continue into the weekend, but there will be some disruption along the way.
Rain and freezing rain will intensify from the southwest this afternoon. A winter weather advisory has been issued for the entire News10 area until noon Wednesday. Untreated surfaces may be slippery tonight.
But first, there's the snow. Light snow will fall between 1 and 3 p.m. Areas in the valley will experience a brief mix of rain or showers. The flakes will continue to fly tonight.
Accumulation will be on the bright side. Most of the News10 area will see between 1 and 3 inches. Locally, higher amounts are expected in higher elevations in the southern Adirondacks and western New England.
Things will calm down a bit late tonight until we wake up Wednesday. The next wave of precipitation will bring calmer air. In the process, what falls becomes ice-like. Winter rain, a mix of snow, sleet and cold rain, will move in from the south. This icy mixture will affect parts of the area during the morning commute. We are all heading towards the cold rain. Due to the extreme cold in the highlands, icy conditions can last most of the day. Light ice buildup not only makes surfaces hazardous, but can also stress tree branches and power lines.
By Thursday everyone will enjoy milder air and only rain will fall. The volatile pattern will end by Friday afternoon. We're looking at the possibility of another storm later in the week. And it looks like January will end cold.
