Although sporting events, especially baseball, were difficult to hold due to frankly inclement weather, the Lintec and Bishop Fenwick baseball teams made the most of their first games.
In a previously postponed matchup, Lynn Tech and Salem Academy finally met at Fraser Field. In the end, the Tigers outscored their opponents 10-5 with Will McCafferty's nine strikeouts and zero earned runs through five innings.
“We started the season tonight with our aces and Will McCafferty didn't disappoint,” Tech coach Eddie Lewis said. “He pitched well through the first five innings of the game, and the rest of the team was good as well, closing out the game for him.”
At the plate, Colin Newhall went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Nevin Gonzalez went 2-for-2, and “David Perez, Dylan Nordyke, and Kris Boyd all hit bases in key moments of the game.” According to Lewis. The do-it-all McCafferty also tripled home.
“We got off to a fast start tonight. We've been working hard all offseason and that hard work paid off tonight. I have to give this group a lot of credit. They. They have a lot of chemistry and play for each other. The bats started flying early and I really liked what they looked like on the bases tonight,” Lewis said. “Tonight was truly a team effort and I'm looking forward to seeing what this young group can do once we get going.”
Boyd picked up the save for Tech, which will next play against Boston University Charter School on Tuesday.First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
“We have to fix some mistakes and tighten up some things, but overall I’m happy for the team to get the win on the first day,” Lewis said.
