Billionaire Mike Bloomberg is investing $250 million to open 10 health care industry-focused high schools across the country, including one in Dallas.
In North Texas, Baylor Scott & White Health and public charter school system Uplift Education will team up to transform Uplift Heights Preparatory School in West Dallas into a health care-focused campus. They also plan to establish a health science pathway at Uplift Grand Preparatory in Grand Prairie.
“These innovative programs not only change the trajectory of young people's lives, but also the families and communities we serve,” Baylor Scott & White and Uplift leaders said in a joint statement. “It has the potential to transform the economic health of the world.”
The local partnership will receive approximately $14.6 million from the funding pool to roll out its services. It is one of two high schools in Texas, with Memorial Hermann Health System and Aldine ISD opening high schools in the Houston area.
Through dedicated high schools and new career paths, students can gain training, certification and experience in fields such as surgical technologists, radiology technologists and respiratory therapists. Officials aim to allow students to work with affiliated health care providers immediately after graduation.
