In an effort to recognize area students who exemplify great character, the Hawkeye 10 Conference Management Committee created the Hawkeye 10 Conference Character Award. Selection for this award was based on her six pillars of character as defined by The Institute of Character Development. The six pillars of character are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, compassion, and citizenship. Not all candidates are given the same challenges to show their individuality, so not all candidates need to excel in all designated assessment categories.
Each Hawkeye Ten Conference school selected a senior “Character Award” recipient through faculty nominations, followed by a local decision to determine the recipient. Atlantic High School senior Nicole Middenz was recognized as the recipient of the Hawkeye 10 Conference Her Character Award. Nicole will attend Simpson University where she plans to study either physical education or elementary education.
A special awards banquet recognizing character award winners was held at the Cass County Community Center on Wednesday, April 3, in conjunction with the Hawkeye 10 Conference All-Academic Team Banquet. The emcee for this prestigious event was Nathan Perrien, chairman of the Hawkeye Ten Management Committee, and the keynote speaker was retired Maj. Gen. Chris Hughes.
