Fortune magazine has named Sanford Health to its list of America's Most Innovative Companies for the second year in a row. The 2024 list recognizes 200 companies operating in the United States that are “transforming change within and outside of their industry.”
Sanford Health is ranked #150th – up 48 spots from 2023 – and is the only South Dakota or North Dakota-based company recognized on this list, which includes companies from numerous sectors across the country. Of his 200 companies recognized by Fortune, 44 are in healthcare and 21 are in health systems. Other health care companies on the list include Johnson & Johnson, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Pfizer, Henry Ford Health System, and UPMC.

Sanford Health plans to open the Sanford Virtual Care Center this fall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the centerpiece of a $350 million virtual care initiative. The initiative includes educational institutions with simulation centers, innovation centers with accelerator spaces to co-develop solutions for the future of care delivery, and living rooms to test new tools and technologies. Sanford Health continues to take an innovative approach to the challenges facing rural health care. An example is the expansion of graduate medical education programs. Leverage AI-enabled technology, automation, and predictive analytics to reduce the administrative burden that leads to burnout. and incorporating new care delivery models, such as remote patient monitoring, to better serve rural populations.
Sanford Health leaders have been at the forefront of industry efforts to develop voluntary standards for the use of AI tools in healthcare. Gassen was one of the first 28 healthcare executives to voluntarily sign a pledge highlighting the need to ensure AI safety and accountability.
Fortune's rankings are informed by scores based on three dimensions, each weighted equally: product innovation, process innovation, and innovation culture. Fortune partnered with Statista to develop the rankings. The ranking began with a call for entries on fortune.com, listing over 25,000 companies for consideration, and all eligible companies were able to register and participate in the ranking.
