The Arizona Humane Society is waiving pet adoption fees for the rest of the weekend thanks to the BISSELL Pet Foundation's “Empty the Shelters” campaign.
The campaign, which runs from April 3 to April 7, will waive adoption fees for anyone who wants to give a furry friend a forever home. A list of acceptable pets can be found on the Humane Society website. Pets are microchipped, vaccinated, spayed and neutered, and receive free follow-up exams.
Kelsey Dickerson, spokeswoman for the Humane Society, said the adoption event has been quite popular and appears to be helping shelters make room for more pets.
“When you're doing two adoptions for $0, that definitely seems like a big push, but it helps if other shelters get involved as well, because it's information It's all about spreading the word and leveraging our community to help more pets find their forever homes,'' Dickerson said.
Dickerson said that when BISSELL holds large-scale adoption events, they are typically held in locations around the country. She said the Humane Society and other shelters are struggling along with the community.
Dickerson said the shelter (which includes foster homes) currently cares for about 1,000 pets. She said shelters are struggling with capacity and are trying to keep pets in their care and make more space for injured, sick or abused pets that come through the shelter doors. said that special measures for adoption are important.
“People want to adopt, but in some cases people may not adopt just because of the adoption fee,” Dickerson said.
For those who are not in a suitable location to adopt, fostering a pet is also an option. Dickerson said the shelter provides caregivers with everything they need, including medical care and supplies.
