We will be back at GCN Tech Clinic again to diagnose your bike's technical and maintenance issues and provide you with the appropriate treatment. This week, Olly and Alex take a closer look at shifter and groupset upgrades, power differences and sealant solutions for punctures.
What influences power output and timing on similar rides?
With two vehicles that look the same, there are so many variables that can affect performance. We recommend that comparing vehicles in this way is not necessarily informative. He could have one or more reasons for the difference in data, considering weather conditions, clothing worn, traffic, tire pressure, power meter accuracy, etc. Rather than focusing on average power, it's more beneficial to try and evaluate where you're actually putting the increased power during a given ride. For example, you can use Strava to do this by looking at some key segments and analyzing your performance there.
Can my old Ultegra shifter be repaired or do I need to replace it?
It is possible to repair the shifter, but it can be a very involved process as the individual parts are not easy to source. The only real way this can be achieved is to have two shifters, from which he creates one “proper” shifter. However, that in itself is not an easy task, so unless you are a very competent mechanic, you may be better off trying to source another used shifter that has less wear than your current one.
Is putting a sealant in the inner tube an effective way to provide double protection against punctures?
This is not as effective as a dedicated tubeless tire system, but it works. Rather than offering double protection, you'll be paying extra weight, but it works in a similar way to a tubeless setup.
Is it worth changing from Dura Ace 9100 mechanical groupset to Ultegra Di2?
This ultimately depends on personal choice and current group set status. Assuming your Dura Ace setup is still in decent condition, there's really no reason to change it. This is a very good groupset and provides great shifting. Better save your money. On the other hand, if it's showing signs of wear and needs replacement, you should consider Ultegra Di2 rather than spending money on a new Dura Ace.
How can I get rid of the smell from my bicycle helmet?
Care must be taken to avoid introducing chemicals that may adversely affect the foam material of the helmet. You can also wash your helmet with a mild detergent and spray it with a special air freshener like Febreze after each ride. Alternatively, some of the major helmet manufacturers may sell replacement pads for your helmet. Buying sets and alternating them after washing will help them stay fresh longer.
How much excess lube should be wiped off the chain after application?
When lubricating a chain, you are actually lubricating the internal parts of the chain, allowing the lubricant to seep into the crevices of the chain itself. The lubrication process usually means there is a lot of lubricant on the outer area of the chain, which is actually undesirable as dirt and debris can get stuck there. So once applied, wipe down all the outside areas of the chain.
