PUNKSTOWNEY — Local members of the honorary educational society Delta Kappa Gamma International met March 23 at the Cobblestone Hotel and Suites in Punxsutawney.
The program featured the Blue Ribbon Award awarded to Wasson Avenue Elementary School by the U.S. Department of Education. Principal Heather Ziki explained how the elementary school came to win the prestigious award, which is a competitive award given after a rigorous screening process. Each year, the agency seeks out and recognizes schools that demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to closing the achievement gap among students.
Mr. Zikii proudly described how Mr. Wasson has progressed academically through various administrative changes and staff efforts, a measure of his growth over the course of a year. Although this advancement was the basis of the criteria, it was not the sole determining factor for the award. The 25-page application required a number of evaluations, involving classroom teachers, police security, secretaries, custodians, PTA members, community members and students. The committee proceeded with the formulation of an “action vision.''
Zikii noted a notable change in school culture. By increasing incentives for positive behavior, introducing quarterly assemblies, the concept of a school song sung daily, and accepting others with respect, parents expressed how enthusiastic they were about their children attending school. Ta. These changes set Wasson apart from other elementary schools.
Dzikiy said the Blue Ribbon Awards Ceremony was a memorable three-day event in Washington, D.C. “It was a professional highlight, but the reception at Wasson with students and staff was amazing. The awards ceremony was recreated with blue pompoms, a blue carpet, and a proud audience.”
DKG members and all educators appreciate the recognition and recognition of teachers' professional talents. Wasson is a great model of best practices.
