Georgia Tech enters its final week of spring football practice, culminating in the annual white and gold game on Saturday afternoon.
After Tuesday's practice, veteran safety LaMyles Brooks (67 tackles, one interception, six pass deflections) spoke to the media for the first time this spring and here's everything he had to say.
1. What you are doing to improve your communication…
“There's more pre-snap communication. Looking at the last picture, we're getting calls like the offense is showing us, alerting us to a check, alerting us to what we're going to do if the picture changes. It's like, 'So I think trying to get ahead of the play and being alert in the movement and things like that helps when the ball gets snapped. ”
2. It motivated him to come back…
“Last year we had a down season, we had some injuries, and I wish the production wasn't where I wanted it to be. So I was definitely motivated, but with what happened last year… It's like accepting it, accepting it for what it is, and making this season strictly about this season and not trying to look back or compare anything to past seasons.”
3. On what he sees from other defenders…
“Again, it probably goes back to communication. As far as the D-line, the D-line is doing their job. There's not a lot of communication between the D-line and the secondary, but the linebackers are talking to the D-linemen. The secondary is talking to the linebackers. Everyone is on the same page now. There's no break in communication. It allows everyone to play at full speed and do things like swarm the ball. I think we're able to play faster because we all know everyone's challenges.”
4. Check if you have a preference about which safe position to play.…
“Well, to be honest, I don't really. I like being able to play both. I don't really have a preference. If I'm asked, I can play nickel, I can do anything at corner. So, I don't really have a preference. No. Anywhere the coach is looking.'' To help the defense be good, defense is the best fit for me and that's where I want to play. ”
5. Regarding daily offensive practice…
“That's true. Our offense does a lot of tricky things, so it's like practicing against them. Every day you see a lot of different pictures, shifts and motions, play calls, things like that. You can.’ Well, that’s fun. Because we think it's great preparation for the season. I believe that the photographs we have today, even the most difficult ones, will eventually be seen in some form, in some form. Just trying to accept the challenge of competing against our offense and then trying to apply what we learned against them and against our opponents. ”
6. About Coach Santucci…
“Very active, very high energy. If he could, he would go out and run with us. The way he motivates us and keeps us motivated in good and bad situations. I know he's going to find it. He's got a lot of energy. Even in the boardroom, everyone feeds off of that and it keeps us going.”
7. As for what fans can expect on Saturday…
“The competition, both the offense and defense are going to be competing against each other. It's going to be fun to watch, there's just a lot of competition and it's going to be fun. It's going to probably be fun between both sides. You know, we all “It's going to be a little bit of trash talk, there's going to be a lot of celebrating and stuff like that. But you know, we're actively competing against each other.” What you see is.”
8. On how fresh the bowl game is in his memory…
“It's not fresh anymore. It was right after we won. It was a fun couple of weeks into the offseason, but then we came back and had winter training and stuff like that.” I know the effort was off my mind, I know our next goal. ”
